As entrepreneurs, we are constantly going to trade shows, going on trips and meeting up with other people at Masterminds but there’s always a question of “what do I do with my time?”. I just had a client ask me about a situation he found himself in. He flew all the way across the country and he was faced with whether to go out to dinner with the people he was meeting or if he should go back to my room and do some work or sleep? If you’re with a group of people who are hitting a bar or staying up all night talking there comes a point when you have to ask yourself, “is this good for me?” or “will I function better with more sleep?”. However, you are very aware that leaving may cause you to miss out on connections.
The connections, the deals, the joint ventures, all of those things can happen during the non-conference hours. So, I told my client that he was there to have the experience. He was there for the education but he was never, ever going to have the opportunity to be in this same area as those people in one room at one time. Take advantage of it! My philosophy is go ahead and get tired now and build those connections.
You do need to take care of yourself and you should limit the alcohol but we all know our limits. My personal philosophy is go ahead and take advantage of all of those opportunities. Stay out a little late and pass up some sleep because the best part of these events and meetings is the connections. It’s the people that you meet and connect with that create the business and projects you want.
